Update: Fatality in Route 104 3-vehicle accident


A deadly three-car accident on Route 104 and Purdam Road around 11:30 this morning

A preliminary investigation by police say 80-year-old Donald E. McAfee of Auburn was traveling west on Route 104 and slowed down to turn onto Putnam Road. The vehicle behind him, driven by 67-year-old Jill L. Crowl of Rochester slowed down, but 71-year-old James McClelland of Auburn hit the rear end of Crowl’s car, forcing it into the back of McAfee’s car, forcing him to to come to a rest on Purdam Road. McClelland’s and Crowl’s vehicles came to rest in a ditch on the side of Route 104.

Crowl’s passenger, a 71-year-old man from Rochester was pronounced dead at the scene. Crowl was transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital with serious injuries.

The Illinois State Police are investigating the accident.

UPDATE: The Sangamon County Coroner has released the name of the 71-year-old man who died in a three car crash on July 28th at Route 104 and Purdom Road.

Coroner Cinda Edwards says the deceased was Gene Crowl of Rochester. Edwards says preliminary results indicate he died from injuries sustained in that crash. The Illinois State Police is investigating the crash.
