The retail landscape keeps changing, and in some cases, not for the better, on the west side of Springfield.
Electronics and appliance retailer hhgregg says they are closing 88 stores across the country, including the one in Springfield at White Oaks Mall.
In a statement, the company describes it as part of efforts to advance a “turnaround.” CEO Robert Riesbeck says they’re closing stores and “leaving markets” that, quote “are not financially profitable.”
Indianapolis-based hhgregg is also closing a store in Champaign, in addition to four other Illinois stores, mostly in the Chicago suburbs.
Three distribution facilities are also slated to be closed. Closing sales are expected to start in the coming weeks.
