Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – If the Illinois Senate and governor agree with the House, Illinois will have an official state bee.

The bill, sponsored by State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr (D-Naperville), said school children in her district recommend that the black and gold bumblebee earn that designation.

“They worked with the Illinois State Board of Education and were able to get input from over eighty communities in Illinois,” Yang Rohr told the House. “Students from as far north as Richmond and as far south as Marion had input. I hope that, like me, you are proud of your young constituents in passing this bill.

“It’s been a few months of very hard work by students from all across Illinois.”

State Rep. Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis), the minority floor leader whose job it is to lead debate of the Democrats’ bills, had to go there: “I’ve heard a lot of buzz about this bill …”

The bill passed the House unanimously.
