(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The age of the digital ID begins Thursday in Illinois.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced that starting Wednesday, Illinois drivers will be able to store a digital copy of their driver’s licenses in their Apple Wallets. The technology will soon be available in Google and Samsung wallets as well.

Giannoulias says it’s about convenience and security.

“This is a game-changer for Illinois residents,” said Giannoulias. “Your ID can live right on your iPhone — ready to use at airports, restaurants, and bars across the state. This launch brings together security, privacy, and convenience in a way that will make life easier for millions of people. We promised innovative solutions, and today, we’re delivering.”

Illinois Liquor Control Commission executive director Lisa Gardner, joining Giannoulias at a Chicago news conference Wednesday, said it’s also a way to foil fake ID’s.

Here’s how to do it: touch the Add button on your Apple Wallet, choose Driver’s License, and follow the directions.
