Business group: Seizure bill is not fair

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A leading small business group says a health insurance bill amounts to “Rules for thee, but not for me.” That’s because the state’s insurance plan is exempted.

“This mandate falls directly on the small business health insurance plans,” said Noah Finley, Illinois director of the National Federation of Independent Business. “Not on Big Corporate. Not on the state. It only falls on the small business plans.”

“Expanding access to these devices is a critical step to ensuring longer and healthier lives for everyone, and by requiring coverage through health insurance plans, we are creating new pathways for those who suffer from a seizure disorder to get the care they deserve,” said sponsoring State Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) at a Capitol news conference this month promoting the bill.

In an e-mailed statement Wednesday, Morrison responded: “Providing coverage for seizure detection devices at any level is a proactive step in the right direction to ensure everyone has access to a life-changing and saving medical device. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with my colleagues and stakeholders on this measure.”
