Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Sangamon County Clerk Don Gray says there was an incident involving a company that  the county is using for its elections, but did not directly involve local voters.

Gray says registered voters in the county, as requested by the Illinois Attorney General’s office, are being sent letters by the company, Platinum Technology, which is legitimate, explaining the problem.

According to Gray, the “incident” that occurred involved by voter registration data in 15 counties:  Sangamon, Alexander, Boone, Champaign, DeKalb, Effingham, Gallatin, Hamilton, Henry, Jefferson, Ogle, Pike, St. Clair, and Williamson.  Gray says reports published in 2024 included claims that “certain images stored outside Platinum Technology’s primary application could have been viewed or accessed,” according to a news release.  “An independent third-party review disputed those claims and found that accessing the images would have required someone to specifically download them.”

Gray says no unusual activity was detected, and no election-related data was accessed or compromised.

“The security of voter information and the integrity of our elections are res are responsibilities we take seriously,” said Gray, in the news release.  “While this incident involved a third-party vendor and not Sangamon County’s election systems, we understand that residents expect their information to be protected.  We have worked to review the available information, and based on the evidence and independent analysis, there is no indication that our election systems were compromised or that the integrity of any election was affected. Our office will continue working with our vendors and election partners to ensure appropriate safeguards remain in place.”

Gray says if you receive a letter, it doesn’t mean your information was breached, and that the letters were required by the Illinois Attorney General.
