Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – It’s not a huge amount of revenue, but it’s pretty reliable.

That’s how District 186 describes its share of county sales tax proceeds the district uses for building needs.

Director of Business, Finance, and Operations Steve Miller projects, based on the district’s percentage of all county school enrollment, the district will get a bit more this year.

“The new rate, at 47.74 [percent of Sangamon County students enrolled in District 186 schools] would have been $1.36 million. The old rate, what we actually received, was $1.357 million. The difference between the two is about $6,000,” said Miller.

That revenue is what is bankrolling most of the building construction going on right now, and will help finance a proposed issuance of bonds for more infrastructure needs the school board will consider next month.

“It’s good news,” said Miller. “We’re getting more money. It’s just not a windfall of money.”

The district does have to be aware of any potential declines in sales tax revenue, due to economic or other factors. But they’re hopeful the same voters who approved the sales tax to begin with, will continue to help local schools.
