Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Authorities continue to investigate after fire broke out in a Springfield apartment in the downtown area Monday afternoon.

According to a news release, Springfield firefighters responded to a blaze at Near North Village Apartments, 401 E. Jefferson, around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Heavy black smoke could be seen coming from a fourth floor apartment, said Julie Plunk, Assistant Fire Chief.  Crews, Plunk said, were able to put the fire out and keep it from spreading, but remained on scene for two hours.

One person was taken to a local hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” said Plunk.

Neither the cause, nor any estimates of damage, were released.
