Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – You might not want to “glaze over” the Mel-o-Cream Donuts location in Southern View the next time you’re driving down that portion of the “Mother Road.”

The ribbon was cut Wednesday on the new donut-themed Route 66 sign has been installed and unveiled at Mel-o-Cream on 6th St. in Southern View.

“This store is located on Route 66, and we’re really excited about the 100th anniversary (of the road) next year,” said Amanda Crossland, owner of the 6th St. Mel-o-Cream, and four others in the area.

Amy Beadle of Visit Springfield says the new sign, designed and installed by Ace Sign Co., was put up at the perfect time.

“We have about 50 different things to see, do, and now eat along Route 66,” said Beadle.  “And Amanda has been for years now part of our ‘Living Legends and Landmarks Passport’ as well.  They’re a stop on that Route 66 experience, too.  So, it was just a good tie-in.”

Beadle says other Mel-o-Cream locations have been on the Mother Road, too.

The Southern View location Wednesday also celebrated having extended hours and some new menu items, including ice cream.
