SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – Illinois has been recognized as an AARP age-friendly state following work to help seniors live and age well. State leaders believe this designation shows the important value of older adults’ lifelong experiences and contributions to Illinois.

Illinois is only the 16th state to join the AARP network of age-friendly states. AARP leaders said this will help Illinois cities and counties join a network of age-friendly communities, improving housing, transportation, health, and economic security.

“Your commitment to building a more age-friendly Illinois demonstrates the power of collaboration and a shared belief that every resident deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, purpose, and independence throughout their lives,” said AARP Illinois State Director Philippe Largent.

The announcement comes as the Illinois Department on Aging created the state’s first comprehensive, multi-sector plan for aging this year. EngAging Illinois focuses on making communities more livable and connected by improving health, supporting caregivers, and making aging more affordable.

“More than 20 state agencies and many not-for-profit organizations and businesses are already hard at work creating an age-friendly future for communities, families, older adults, and people with disabilities around the state,” said Illinois Department on Aging Director Mary Killough.

IDOA officials said this is critical as there will be more people over 65 than under 18 by 2030. They stressed everyone can play a role in making Illinois the best state in the country for people to age.

“The evidence is clear and compelling that the health risks of social isolation are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day,” said EngAging Illinois Chief Planning Officer Michelle Hoersch. “There are so many excellent models and programs out there and resources to ensure social interactions, such as community centers and activities designed with older adults in mind.”

AARP said the age-friendly state designation and EngAging Illinois mark an important step toward making Illinois a place where people can live well, stay connected, and continue contributing at every age.
