Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Capitol Development Board announce the completion of the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices in Downtown Springfield.

The Rebuild Illinois capital investment project cost $3.9 million. The work focused on renovating key architectural elements to their original character, including the repair of damaged wood, painting, and replacement of floors and windows. Upgrades were also made to the building’s infrastructure, such as new ac units, duct work, lighting, and CCTV.

The purpose of the restoration was to ensure the safety of employees and visitors and improve accessibility at the building.

IDNR Interim Director Renee Snow said in a news release, “We are excited about the completion of this restoration project and are eager to welcome visitors and the community back to this special site”.

The Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices are within the only remaining building in which Abraham Lincoln maintained a law office. It’s the only surviving portion of a three-story brick commercial block constructed in 1840-1841. Operated by IDNR, the exterior is in the Greek Revival architectural style and located at the Old State Capitol Plaza.

Improvements to the interior and exterior of the Old State Capitol State Historic Site are also nearing completion.
