Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – We’re learning more about the severe thunderstorms and tornadoes that moved through the area Wednesday night and Thursday, including one that caused damage at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport and the Animal Protective Legue not far away.

According to reports compiled by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, an EF-1 tornado started just after 11 p.m. Thursday night near the airport, and travelled a total of 24.1 miles before dissipating.  Tree and building damage was reported near Camp Butler National Cemetery, and Mechanicsburg.  It’s believed that tornado caused tree and building damage at the Capitol Media Group studios and nearby, among other places.  The tornado ended five miles east of Mechanicsburg, north of the Sangamon River.

Another tornado was tracked in the area, but travelled a much smaller distance.  NWS says a tornado developed three miles northeast of Tallula at 10:49 p.m. and was on the ground only for six minutes.  It caused damage to a grain bin, and several trees.  The NWS report also says shingles were ripped from buildings on State Park Road and at Lincoln’s New Salem State Park, among other reports.

Other tornadoes were reported throughout Illinois, as you can see by the NWS map above.  According to reports, Illinois has had 133 tornadoes already this year — the most of any state in the United States.
