Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Exciting news may be ringing out from Washington Park! Connie Heskett with the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon Society joined the WTAX Morning Newswatch to share a major announcement about one of Springfield’s most iconic landmarks — The Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon.
Plans are underway to build a museum and event space adjacent to the Carillon tower.
This new facility would serve multiple purposes: restoring public access to the Carillon’s interior, offering educational opportunities for children, and hosting community events year-round.
The Carillon has long been a centerpiece of Springfield’s cultural life, especially during the annual June festival that brings in international Carillon performers.
But due to safety concerns, access to the tower has been restricted in recent years. The proposed museum would help bridge that gap, allowing visitors — especially students — to learn about the history and mechanics of the instrument in a safe and engaging environment.
The project is ambitious, with an estimated timeline of five to seven years and a price tag in the millions of dollars.
Organizers are calling on the Springfield Park District and the broader community to support the vision and help bring it to life.
