Taylorville, IL (WAND) – The Taylorville Fire Department said there is no threat to the public after oil had made its way into the pond at a local park.

Taylorville FD was called just after 3:15 p.m. Thursday to check out an unknown liquid seen floating in the pond at Manners Park.

The liquid was identified as a “fuel-type oil” that had gotten into the pond through a storm sewer drain.

During an investigation, the oil was found to have come from an area north of the park near the train depot.

TFD said that it deployed booms in certain areas of the pond to prevent the oil from spreading further.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will head to the area Friday to investigate.

While there is no threat to the public, the park is closed to give crews room to work.
