Woman shot in Decatur while attending vigil

Decatur, IL (WAND) – A woman was shot while attending a candlelight vigil for a murder victim in Decatur Tuesday night, according to the Decatur Police Department.

Then police said during the shooting investigation a suspected drunk driver hit an unoccupied police car.

Decatur police said they were called shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday to North Church and West Johnson streets after someone heard gunfire. Police said they found a 48-year-old woman a couple of blocks away who had been shot.

The victim, according to police, had been driving to a vigil in the area for a recent homicide victim. Police said her car was shot while driving and she was hit in the leg. Her injuries are non-life threatening, according to police.

It’s not clear if she was targeted in the shooting.

A 54-year-old man died after being shot on North Church Street Monday. The shooting death in Decatur was one of several violent crimes over the Labor Day weekend in Decatur.

Police said while investigating the shooting, an unoccupied DPD police car was sideswiped by a vehicle that drove through the crime scene. Police said the are was taped off with crime scene tape. The 41-year-old driver was eventually stopped a few blocks away.

Police have not named the driver, but said the man is facing several charges including DUI, driving on a revoked license, and eluding police.
