SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – History was made as the Women’s Professional Baseball League started its first-ever championship series Wednesday at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield.

And to say the least, people were excited — and proud to witness the moment.

“Oh my gosh. Talk about camaraderie, love and support for these ladies. It is an experience like no other,” said fan Sarah Marley.

For every pitch — and every run — this league brought a different message to the field: women’s empowerment.

“My heart is just enjoyment all the way through, from day one till now. Being able to be out there and play professional baseball is something that, you know, us older ladies would have loved to be able to do,” said fan Sara Malloy.

Regardless of the winner, many fans feel the league is helping open doors for future generations.

“I like watching them play,” said one seven-year-old girl.

“This is something new and different. It’s inspiring for young people to come out and see something new in the process of happening, instead of just traditions,” said fan Frances Springer.

Hundreds of people held signs that read, “I am a part of history,” to mark the unforgettable moment.

“The fact that we are now having our women’s baseball league again, and how many years it’s history in the making, and I’m just happy to be a part of it,” said Aubrey Coons, a fan.

The Los Angeles Queens took Game 1, 7-6.  They also won Game 2 11-7.

The first team to win three games in the championship series will become the first WPBL champion.

The next game in the best-of-five series is at 6 p.m. Saturday.
